Parliament passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 in the early hours of Friday after a marathon and heated debate.
Rajya Sabha sat beyond midnight to pass the legislation. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said, "Ayes 128 and Noes 95, Absent zero. The Bill is passed."
Lok Sabha, which took up discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday, passed it past midnight after a marathon debate.
The government introduced the revised bill after incorporating the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which examined the legislation introduced in August last year. The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995 and improve the administration and management of Waqf properties in India.
The Bill aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process and increasing the role of technology in managing waqf records.
Comments:
Finally some accountability measures for Waqf properties! This has been long overdue. Hope this brings more transparency to the system 👍
As a Muslim, I welcome any reform that brings more transparency and efficiency to our institutions. The Waqf boards definitely needed modernization.
While I support the principle of equality, I hope the implementation will be fair and not used to target any particular community. The proof will be in how it's executed.
Great move! No institution should be above the law. This bill seems to be a step in the right direction for better governance across all sectors.
I appreciate the intent behind the bill, but I'm concerned about potential overreach. The Waqf Act already had provisions for accountability. We'll have to see if these amendments actually improve things or just create more bureaucracy.
The midnight debates show how important this legislation is! Glad to see our parliamentarians working hard to pass meaningful reforms 👏
