"From the abrogation of Article 370, enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), abolition of Triple Talaq, progress toward a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), to the recent amendment of the Waqf Act -- this is a bold and unapologetic reclaiming of our civilisational roots. India is rising, rooted in its cultural confidence, and charting its course with clarity, courage, and conviction," Assam CM said on X.
The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after a marathon and heated debate. While members of the INDIA bloc strongly opposed the legislation, the BJP and its allies supported it, arguing that it would bring transparency and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards.
The House sat beyond midnight to pass the legislation. Speaker Om Birla later announced the division's result. "Subject to correction, Ayes 288, Noes 232. The majority is in favour of the proposal," he said.
The government introduced the revised bill after incorporating the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which examined the legislation introduced in August last year. The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995 and improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India.
It aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process and increasing the role of technology in managing waqf records.

Finally some accountability in Waqf management! The previous system was full of loopholes and mismanagement. This is a step in the right direction for transparent governance. 👏

While I support reforms, I hope this doesn't become another tool for unnecessary government interference in religious matters. The implementation needs to be balanced and fair.

The heated debate shows how important this issue is. Glad they're using technology to improve record-keeping - that's long overdue! Maybe now we'll see better utilization of these properties.

"Civilisational roots" rhetoric aside, if this actually brings transparency and helps prevent misuse of Waqf properties, it's a win for all Indians regardless of religion. Actions matter more than words!

I appreciate the effort to modernize administration, but the political framing of this as "reclaiming civilizational roots" seems unnecessarily divisive. Can't we just focus on good governance without the cultural war angle? 🤔
