Assam Rifles seizes drugs, e-cigarettes valued at Rs 18.66cr; 5 held

Assam Rifles, in collaboration with various agencies, has successfully conducted operations in Mizoram and southern Assam, leading to significant drug seizures. Notably, 50,000 methamphetamine tablets and 386 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup were confiscated. The seizures included foreign e-cigarettes, heroin, and fake Indian currency notes. The operations resulted in the arrests of five individuals, including two nationals from Myanmar.

Aizawl/Silchar, March 26: The Assam Rifles and other agencies in five separate operations have seized various drugs, foreign e-cigarettes and fake Indian currencies worth Rs 18.66 crore in Mizoram and southern Assam and apprehended five drug peddlers including two Myanmarese nationals, an official said on Wednesday.

A Defence spokesperson said that in a significant success in its efforts against drug smuggling, Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the officials of Excise and Narcotics Department, seized 50,000 highly addictive methamphetamine tablets also known as Yaba or party tablets, valued at Rs 15 crore.

The drugs, smuggled from Myanmar, recovered from Bualpui in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district and apprehended a 53-year-old Myanmarese, who is a resident of Lungrang village, Hakha District of the neighbouring Myanmar.

In the second operation, the para-military force along with the officials of Excise and Narcotics Department officials, in a joint operation have seized 386 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup and apprehended another Myanmarese from Iron Bridge areas of Zokhawthar in Mizoram’s Champhai district.

During the routine checking of goods at the India-Myanmar friendship bridge, a suspicious consignment was detected and on the spot search revealed contraband concealed inside juice packages meant to be smuggled from Myanmar into India.

Myanmar national identified as Lang Ngaih Lian (45), a resident of Tahan in the neighbouring country, was taken into custody by the Excise and Narcotics Department.

The seized contraband is said to be valued at around Rs 2 crore.

Smuggling of phensedyl, widely abused as a narcotic substance, poses a significant threat to public health, the spokesperson said.

In the third operation, Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs have seized huge quantities of foreign e-cigarettes, contained in 14 boxes, from Zokhawthar in Champhai district.

The recovered contraband, valued at Rs 16.43 lakh, was handed over to the Customs for further investigation and legal proceedings.

In the fourth operation, Assam Rifles in association with the officials of Excise and Narcotics Department have intercepted a vehicle and seized 151.7 grams of heroin valued at Rs 1.13 crore and apprehended three individuals from Zokhawthar in Champhai district.

The apprehended individuals, identified as Rashid Ahmed (28), Imran Khan (27) and Kanrul Islam Laskar (27) are all residents of Assam. The seized contraband, valued at Rs 1.13 crore, along with the vehicle and individuals, were handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department.

In the fifth operation, the Assam Rifles seized fake Indian currency notes worth Rs 37,28,500 at Rongpur in southern Assam’s Silchar and arrested a person.
