Political leaders condemn US trade move
"Accha sila diya tune mere pyaar ka, Yaar ne hi loot liya ghar yaar ka." This song perfectly sums up India-US ties today," Raghav Chadha said in a post on X.
"We offered unflinching loyalty, but in return, the Trump Administration has imposed the Trump Tariff that could wreck the Indian economy," he added.
Chadha also posted two questions he posed to Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia during the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
Faced with US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs, India on Thursday said that it is studying the opportunities that may arise from this new development in US trade policy.
The Ministry of Commerce said in a statement that it is carefully examining the implications of the various measures and announcements made by the US administration.
"The US President issued an Executive Order on Reciprocal Tariffs imposing additional ad-valorem duties ranging from 10% to 50% on imports from all trading partners. The baseline duty of 10% will be effective from April 05, 2025, and the remaining country-specific additional ad valorem duty will be effective from April 09, 2025. The additional duty on India, as per Annex I of the Executive Order, is 27%," the Ministry said.
"The Department of Commerce is carefully examining the implications of the various measures/announcements made by the President of the USA. Keeping in view the vision of Viksit Bharat, the Department is engaged with all stakeholders, including the Indian industry and exporters, taking feedback of their assessment of the tariffs and assessing the situation. The Department is also studying the opportunities that may arise due to this new development in the US trade policy," the Ministry added.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant on Thursday said that the Centre must take a "tough stand" against the US administration's imposition of a 26 per cent "reciprocal tariff" on India.
Speaking to ANI, Sawant said, "He (Donald Trump) says one term, 'great man,' and they (BJP) start beating drums. Look at what the US has reduced the 'great man' to. We will have to take a tough stand."
"Despite having an expert as the Minister of External Affairs, the US continues to ridicule us time and again. Look at how the European Union stands against it. Seeing them, we should understand what self-respect truly means," the Shiv Sena (UBT) MP said.
Comments:
Raghav Chadha always has such clever ways to make political points! Using song lyrics to describe trade relations is brilliant 👏 Hope our government finds a good solution to this tariff issue.
While the song reference is creative, I wish our politicians would focus more on concrete solutions rather than just clever tweets. The tariff situation needs serious attention, not just wordplay.
This is why I love following Indian politics - nowhere else do you get such colorful commentary! 😂 But seriously, 27% additional duty is no joke. Our exporters will suffer.
The US keeps changing its trade policies every few years. We need long-term strategies that don't make us so vulnerable to these sudden changes. Maybe time to strengthen other trade partnerships too?
Love the creativity but worried about the actual impact. My uncle's small export business might be in trouble because of these tariffs. Hope the government has a solid plan to support affected businesses 🙏
Interesting to see how politicians from different parties are reacting to this. Chadha with song lyrics, Sawant calling for tough stance... shows the complexity of the issue. Wonder what the actual negotiations will produce.
