Iran, EU hold 'frank' talks on nuclear issues

S

enior diplomats from Iran and the EU on Thursday held widely anticipated talks on Iran's nuclear issue, with both sides describing the discussions as "frank".

Enrique Mora, the EU's Deputy Foreign Policy chief, stated on X that he had a "frank exchange" with Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister regarding several pressing issues. These included Iran's military support to Russia, which he insisted must stop, the need for a diplomatic solution to the nuclear issue, and the importance of avoiding further escalation of regional tensions from all sides. He also emphasized the necessity of addressing human rights concerns.

In response, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi expressed on X that it was reaffirmed that "the EU should abandon its self-centered and irresponsible behaviour towards issues and challenges of this continent and international matters." He argued that Europe should not "project its own problems and mistakes onto others," particularly in relation to the Ukraine conflict. Gharibabadi pointed out that major European countries lack the moral authority to lecture others on human rights, citing their "complicity" in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Furthermore, he criticized Europe for failing to be a serious player regarding Iran's nuclear issue, attributing this to a lack of self-confidence and responsibility. According to Xinhua news agency, Iran is planning to hold talks with Britain, France, and Germany in Geneva on Friday to discuss its nuclear program ahead of Donald Trump's anticipated return to the US presidency in less than two months.
