J&K Cabinet decides to constitute sub-committee to review job reservation policy

&K Cabinet decided on Friday to form a cabinet sub-committee to review the job reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir.

The cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, met on Friday and decided to establish this sub-committee to hold talks with all stakeholders, aiming to arrive at a logical conclusion regarding the number of jobs to be reserved for each category.

Earlier, a controversy erupted after the J&K Public Service Commission issued an advertisement for the posts of lecturers in the School Education Department. The advertisement announced the submission of applications for 575 posts of lecturers, out of which 60 percent were designated for reserved categories, leaving only 238 posts available for open merit candidates. This sparked criticism not only from the opposition but also from within the ruling National Conference (NC). Lok Sabha member Syed Ruhullah Mehdi openly criticized the reservation policy and threatened to sit on dharna outside the Chief Minister's office until the policy is withdrawn and a fresh policy is announced.

In addition to discussing the reservation policy, the Cabinet approved the speech of Lt Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha made in the legislative assembly. The Chief Minister has directed all ministers to begin implementing the assurances given in the L-Gโ€™s speech.

J&K reportedly holds the highest unemployment rate among states and UTs in the country, with a significant number of educated and trained unemployed youth. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has flagged the unemployment issue as a serious concern facing Jammu and Kashmir. He has also instructed ministers to start identifying posts for recruitment in departments under their charge to address this problem. Once various departments identify the number of vacant posts, these will be referred to the service selection board for non-gazetted posts and to the public service commission for gazetted posts.
