Veteran Marine to Serve Community Through Education
E
dward Lofland is no stranger to discipline. The two decades spent serving his country in the United States Marine Corps exposed him to many working environments across several countries.
During a deployment in Japan, Edward and his family were stationed on Kadena Air Station in Okinawa. This is when he first discovered Kumon, as there was a center located on-base. He enrolled his three eldest children and was amazed at how quickly it changed the way they viewed learning.
That was six years ago. After retiring from the Marine Corps and returning home to Virginia, Edward immediately continued his family's Kumon Journey at a local center, where his children are still excelling in the Kumon Math and Reading Program today.
When it came to the question of what he wanted to do next, Edward felt committed to serve his community in a new way. Now, as the owner and Instructor of Kumon of Virginia Beach - Hilltop, he hopes to spark a love for in his community.
The structure and discipline my children gained from their six years in the Kumon Program has changed them in so many positive ways, said Lofland. Kumon was born from a father wanting to help his son - and I'd like to do the same not just for my own children, but all of the children in my community.
When Edward reached out for more information on becoming a Kumon Franchisee, he was met with an extensive network of support. Becoming a Kumon Franchisee is an attractive business opportunity for many aspiring entrepreneurs with a passion for education, as up to $36,000 in startup cost assistance is available to help you get started.
Kumon is a supplemental education program that aims to unlock students' full potential by increasing academic independence, confidence, and study skills. Through daily worksheet study, students that are enrolled in Kumon often end up mastering material far beyond grade level. Learn more about the Kumon Method today.
My hope is to develop minds that will challenge the status quo and enhance the lives of others within the community, said Lofland. I want to prepare our next generation for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
