Indian Women Making Waves in Competitive Worlds

I

t's always fascinating taking a look inside ultra competitive fields, whether its watching athletes at the top of their game, strategists absorbed in a fiendishly difficult puzzle, or even chefs producing complex and elaborate dishes.

Even better than that though, is watching strong and driven women from India competing and succeeding against some of the most talented people in the world. These are some of the most notable Indian women who are doing our country proud at the moment.

Muskan Sethi is a Poker Star

Muskan Sethi has become an ambassador for PokerStars after proving her incredible skills at the poker table. Sethi has been playing poker since she graduated from college and gives credit to her grandmother for much of her skill, as the two of them used to play together when she was young.

In testament to her humble nature, Muskan Sethi also thanks her parents for both viewing poker as a sport and always supporting her in her quest for success. This combination of humility and determination allowed Sethi to become the first professional female poker to ever come out of India.

Although Sethi was recently recognised and congratulated by the government for her incredible achievements, she is not one to rest on her laurels. Her next move is to use her influence to give back to charity. She would like to build a home for the aged, as well as help with a dog charity. The latter as it was always her mother's dream; what a perfect way to thank her parents for their support.

Manushi Chillar is an Ambassador for Menstrual Hygiene

Although many of us know Manushi Chillar as a Bollywood Actress, Miss World and the official most desirable woman in India, she is so much more than a beautiful face. Miss World is fiercely competitive, requiring contestants not only to be beautiful, healthy and fit, but also well educated and pure of heart. After winning the esteemed competition, Manushi Chillar has used her title of Miss World to great charitable effect.

Whilst all Miss World winners are encouraged to participate in charitable events, Manushi Chillar went much further. With her new position in the public eye, Chillar decided to draw attention to period poverty, an issue that effects millions of women and girls worldwide. The first stage of her campaign was to secure funding to begin Project Shakti, an initiative which ensured freely available sanitary napkins for all girls who attended the government schools of Haryana. Chillar was supported by the Chief Minister of the State and her campaign began.

Her tour promoting positive menstrual hygiene took her to all corners of the world. Her stops included South Africa, where low cost sanitary napkin manufacturing machines were installed in Nelson Mandela's birthplace, Kolkata where the Jute Industries Research Association learned how to make low cost biodegradable sanitary pads, and Delhi where she attended and spoke at World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Yashmeen Chauhan is the Definition of a Strong Woman

Now it's time for a woman who is the very definition of 'strong'. Yashmeen Chauhan is best known as the most successful female bodybuilder in India. Although many people assume she was blessed with a naturally strong body which allowed her to progress to this stage, the opposite is in fact true. Brought up by her grandmother and grandfather and suffering from Typhoid during the 7th grade, Chauhan did not have an easy start, or indeed, a strong body.

Her illness was detected very late and the medication that she was given to help her body to heal from the typhoid, had disastrous side effects for her. Her hair began to fall out, her skin suffered severe acne and her once slim body became incredibly bloated. This drastic impact on her appearance made Chauhan feel ashamed. The rest of her family were slim and clear skinned.

She decided once and for all that she would not let these side effects beat her. Chauhan began working out at the gym and, although she was misguided in the beginning, she made it her mission to understand nutrition, exercise and the body. Now she is a professional bodybuilder and personal trainer, all thanks to her immense dedication and hard work.
