ricket is an indoor bat and ball sport played between two teams of eleven on a flat, rectangular field in the middle of which are a number of wickets at the edge of the pitch on which the match is being played.
The match is played for seven days or till one team has won or lost by a particular number of runs. In order to score any runs during the match, one must have the ball in hand, which can be done when the batsman is hitting the ball in order to knock it down or to get it out of the field of play.
Cricket is considered to be one of the world's most popular sports. Cricket matches take place regularly all over the world, although it is predominantly played in Australia and England. In England, there are only three international matches held every four years, while in Australia, one match is played every year.
Cricket is played using only wooden and metal cricket wickets. No artificial material is used in any form. The batsmen and the bowlers are covered with protective clothing, including caps. This type of clothing helps prevent the players from being injured during the match.
Cricket is governed by various rules and regulations, which include the time limit given to the batsman for his run, the length of the wicket, the batting order and the number of players allowed on the field. Certain other rules are also included in the rules of cricket. For instance, in Australia, the players cannot run or field the ball unless their hands are bare; this rule is known as 'no bowling in front of the wicket'.
Cricket is played by teams of eleven players, with one player designated as the batting team. The bowler is known as a batsman, while the one who catches the ball is called a fielding player. While batting a team player tries to hit the ball over or between the wicket's boundary line, or over the fence on the opposite side. Once the player hits the ball or catches it, he is out of the field of play, and the batsman takes his place.
A match can last for many hours, depending on how long the players keep batting or bowling. and how well they have been hitting the ball. Each team has five overs in which to bat or bowl.
Each team usually bats at least one pair of four bowlers and four players at batsmen, although in some cases where a match is not scheduled to finish within the allotted time frame, the batting order may consist of two bowlers and two players. The team batting order has to consist of four batsmen, four bowlers and two fielders. If a team wishes to change their batting order, the opposing captain must inform the umpire in advance.
It is customary to bat first, but in some occasions, the team batting second may bat, and then the bowling order follows after the batsman. If a team has more than one wicket, then it may bat and bowl or vice versa. In case of ties, the match is concluded by a tie-breaker match.
A team starts the match by batting first, and in most occasions that is followed by bowling and then playing the outfielders. Before the match, the teams must be ready for a warm up match. This is a practice which helps players get used to playing cricket.
