Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

The Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary located at 80 kms away from Chennai is famous for migratory birds.

Annamalai Sanctuary

The Annamalai sanctuary is rich in wildlife and teak forests with rich tea and coffee plantations. It has various kinds of fauna like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther, sloth bear, deer, wild bear, wild dog, porcupine, flying squirrel, jackal, pangolin, civet cat and birds like rocket-tailed drongo, re-whiskered bulbul, black headed oriole, tree pie, spotted dove, green pigeon, etc.
 
Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary

The Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary located where the Nilgiri Hills, the offshoot of the Western ghats meet the eastern ghats has varied mixture of flat land, undulating parkland, open grassland, swamp, valleys and nullas.

The fauna include Elephants, Gaur, Bonnet Macaque, Common langur, tigers and leopards, Chital, dhole panther, Sloth Bear, Python, barking deer, Four- Horned Antelope, Otter, Crocodiles (mugger), Giant flying squirrel, Sambar, Hyena, Wild Dog, Wild Boar, Mouse Deer, Spotted Deer, Jackal, Hare, Parcupine and Mongoose.

India's National bird, grey jungle fowl, the red spur fowl, the grey patridge quails, goggle eyed plower, Malabar whistling thrust, large racket-tailed dronge, the shama, the magpie-robin, spotted babbler, small green barbet, green pigeons, little brown dove, malabar grey hornbill, bulbuls, mynahs, etc.

Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park

The Gulf of Mannar Park is a marine bio Sphere, running along the coasts of Ramanathapuram and Tuthukudi (Tuticorin) Districts. The Park is full of coral reefs, Dugong, Turtles, Dolphins and Balano-glossus. Dolphins are the real attractions of the place.

The Mukurthi National Park

The Mukurthi National Park located on the South Eastern corner of the Nilgiris has a viable population of Nilgiri Thar. Other animals of the region are Sambar, Barking deer, Nilgiri marten, otter jungle cat, jackal, etc.

Kalakkadu wild life sanctuary

The Kalakkadu Sanctury situated in Tirunelveli District has the flora ranges from forests of tropical wet ever-green to tropical dry deciduous and thorn forest at down hills. Lion tailed Macaque, Nilgiri tahr, Sambar, Sloth bear, Gaur, Elephant, Tiger, Flying Squirrel, Panther, wild dog, Pangoline are some of the wild life seen in the sanctuary.

Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary

The Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary located in Virudhunagar District has a composition of dry deciduous forests, moist mixed deciduous forests and grass lands. Interesting species are flying squirrel, Giant squirrel, Tree Shrew, Elephant, Lion- tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahar, Mouse Deer, Barking Deer, and many a species of birds.

Mundanthuri Wildlife Sanctuary

The Mundanthuri Wildlife Sanctuary situated in Tirunelveli district has dry deciduous and tropical wet evergreen forests. Animals include Tiger, Bonnet Macaque, Langurs, Slender Loris, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Chital and wild dog.

Vallunadu Black Buck Sanctuary

The Vallunadu Black Buck Sanctuary is a scrub forest area which is the home to Blackbuck, Spotted deer, Macaques, jungle cat, Mangoose and hares.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park

The Arignar Anna Zoological Park is a man-made Zoological Park situated on the outskirts of Chennai Metropolitan. The forests are of dry deciduous and dry evergreen scrub type. The wild life population has more than 170 species of Mammals, Aviaries and reptiles. Lion safari vehicle, Elephant Ride, Battery operated vehicles are some of the facilities available in the region.

Madras Crocodile Bank Trust

The Madras Crocodile Bank protects and conserves the endangered reptiles such as crocodiles, Alligators etc.

Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary

The Point Calimere Sanctuary comprises forests of tidal swamps, dry evergreen forests and mangroves. It is the home to wild life such as Chital, Wild boar, Bannet macaque, Black Buck, Flamingoes, Teals, Gulls, Terns, Plovers, and Stilts. Special attractions are Dolphins and Turtles.

Guindy National Park

The Guindy National Park situated in Chennai has 24 varieties of trees, 14 varieties of shrubs, over 14 types of mammals, and over 37 varieties of birds.
