Surat City Information

Surat is an important trading center and port of ancient India.

It is the city of Textile mills and famous for its zari and brocades. It is also an important diamond cutting centre and referred as the city of gems and diamonds.

Located on the southern bank of Tapti, Surat is renowned for its fine silk and exquisite brocades like the Tanchoi, Gajee and Kinkhab styles.

Places of Interest:

Old Fort - This Fort was built by Mohammad Bin Tughlak as a defence fortification against the Bhils.

Textile Market - It is a vast and active textile market which testifies its importance in the textile trade even today.

Dumas - It is a seaside health resort which is around 16 kms from Surat.

Hajira - It is pleasant beach fringed by feathery Casurina trees and has a comfortable holiday home for visitors.

Dandi - It is well known as a salt centre and has acquired a name in history after the famous 'Dandi March Salt Satyagraha' launched by Gandhiji in March, 1930 AD.
